Local Area Information - Brighton Brighton lies on England's south coast and, together with Hove and Portslade, makes up the City of Brighton and Hove. In the 1700s it was a health resort, which became a day-trip destination in 1841 with the railway's arrival. Brighton's many attractions include the Royal Pavilion, once a royal palace that was constructed during the early 19th century for the Prince Regent. Brighton Pier, known by locals as Palace pier, has arcade halls, restaurants and a funfair.
